Words & Music features Trio 69, Ricky Leach and MORE

On Sunday July 20th the Words & Music Show takes place at 8:30 at Casa del Popolo’s performance space (enter at 4873 St-Laurent, Montreal) and will feature Trio 69, Ricky Leach, 3 visiting writers and music by FayeMoose Four. Admission is $6 or PWYC

Trio 69 describes itself as follows: “Trio 69 (Heather Eaton – voice, Brandon Goodwin – percussion/melodica, Kayla Milmine – soprano saxophone) will perform a bedtime story set that weaves together Maritime folk songs and ballads, spoken word pieces and dream narratives, improvisation and soundscapes. Through this process, they create a kind of show-and-tell from a collection of what high tide left behind. Trio 69 has been performing for live audiences at various venues in Montréal since 2011, including: (the late) Bar L’Absynthe; Le Cagibi; Mainline Theatre; Les Pas Sages; Burritoville; Cabaret Playhouse and Cafe Shaika. Casa del Popolo, however, is their favourite venue and they are giddy with glee to be on the Casa stage once again for this edition of Words + Music!”

Ricky Leach, an artist from Cambridge, England working primarily in performances of lyrical music. Her works reside languidly in a damp-slackened web of humor, pathos, detachment, self-analysis and the sublime. Two albums of her work are available on bandcamp for an independent label in the UK called Lost Toys Records, she is currently working on a third and a fourth. She has been living in Montreal for the last few months and performs regularly. Mark Zuckerburg will always be able to tell you where.

Our visiting writers are Kelsey Knight from Ontario, Josh Quirion out of Bishop’s University and Esmé Stumborg out of Vancouver.

The one wordless act for the evening is headed by British saxophonist Faye MacCalmon, who in her short time in Montreal has been finding many homes for her excellent free jazz. The band is called Fayemoose 4, and consists of Belinda Campbell the powah pianist, Raphael Foisy-Couture the bass whisperer, Felix Antoine-Hamel the horn blower, and Faye MacCalman the wisdom giver. The group explore spontaneous melody through their percussionless sound and improvisatory approach. In 2006 they were offered a major record deal, but they opted out in favour of the simple life and chord crushes that can make glass break, if someone drops a glass. The music is sincere and conversational, with all players believing in an organic attitude towards music making.

The Words & Music Show is hosted by poet and performer Ian Ferrier. It is sponsored by the Quebec Writers’ Federation, CKUT 90.3FM and Wired on Words Productions.
